Consumer Cellular Activation: Ultimate Guide

Last Updated on July 13, 2023 by Ron D. Morgan

After you purchase your Consumer Cellular phone or SIM card kit, the next step is to activate the SIM card. There are two methods available to activate the Consumer Cellular’s SIM card.

The first method is to contact Customer Cellular customer support to walk you through the activation process. Most people prefer not to opt for this method because most times, it takes longer than expected to get through a customer support person.

The second method is to activate the SIM card online. This post will focus on the second option.

In a nutshell, to activate your Consumer Cellular SIM Card online, simply insert the SIM card into your device. Visit the activation page on the Consumer Cellular site and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the process.

This post will guide you through the entire process of activating the Consumer Cellular SIM Card online.

Things To Have Before Activating Consumer Cellular Phone

a. Activation Code

You need the activation code to complete the process. The network adds an activation code to all the SIM Card kits. Simply check the back of the SIM card kit for the activation code. Have the code handy to complete the process.

b. Wireless Internet

The activation process is completed online. So, you need stable wireless internet to complete the process. It has to be a wireless internet because you can’t use the Consumer Cellular’s mobile data until you complete the activation process.

c. Unlock Phone

If you are bringing your phone to the Consumer Cellular, you have to ensure that the device is not locked to any other carrier. In other words, the device has to be unlocked.

Go through this post to find your Carrier’s unlock policy. If your device meets the policy, contact customer support to unlock your device.

Also, remember to update the phone’s firmware before you activate the SIM card, regardless of if it’s a brand-new phone or an old phone.

How To Activate Consumer Cellular Number Via Phone Call

If you don’t have access to the internet or feel the online activation process is too complicated for you, you can contact Consumer Cellular customer support. Contact support at 888-750-5519 and request to activate your line.

Have your activation code handy before you make the call. Insert the SIM card into the phone and call support on another line to activate your Consumer Cellular line.

How Long Does It Take To Activate A Consumer Cellular SIM Card

The times it takes to activate a line on Consumer Cellular will depend on if you are activating a new line or porting in a number from another network.

If you are activating a new line, the number will be active almost immediately after you complete the activation process. You will receive a confirmation SMS or email to confirm this.

On the other hand, if you are transferring an existing number to the Consumer Cellular network, it may take 30 minutes to a couple of hours for the number to be active.

This is because Consumer Cellular has to contact your previous mobile provider to release your number to the network. Some mobile providers do approve port-out requests almost immediately, while others take some time to complete the process.

Note that, if it’s a landline you want to port into the Consumer Cellular network, it may take up to five business days for the line to become active.
